Recently I have returned to full time private practice as a Hynotherapist and Mindfulness Coach. I have been working in the field of counseling and coaching for almost thirty years and I have seen many changes in the way that therapy is delivered. When I first started in the field, therapist were taught to help the client uncover the specific memory or image that may have been the root cause of the client’s issue. Now therapist teach their clients how to be mindful of their own thoughts and emoitons, and to learn that they don’t have to react to every thought and emotion that comes up.

In the last decade a lot has changed and clients are looking for more than just someone that they can talk about their problems / issues, and are instead looking for someone who will help them to focus on, and uncover the solutions to their problems.  The first thing to understand is that you must become mindful of your thoughts and emotions. In other words, you must learn that you are the master of your thoughts and your emotions. Some would say that this is a no brainer, but in reality we are raised to believe something very different.

We are raised to believe that we are our thoughts and we are our emotions. Does the phrase, “I think therefore I am”, ring a bell with any one. A man named Rene Decartes, coined that idea back in the 17th century, and people have believed it for years. This idea has been the part of the reason that we all suffer with stress, anxiety,  and tension.  We are raised to believe that our emotions are caused by other people and other events. In reality our emotions are due ot our own thoughts, our beliefs, and our interpratations of events. A good example would be when one person absolutely loves it when it rains, and another person absolutely hates the rain. The event is the same in both cases, but it is our interpratation of the event that creates our emotions, or our reactions.

Learning mindfulness means that you recognize that you have no control of other people or events, but we do have control over our thoughts and emotions.  Think of that, just by learning mindfulness skills and techniques we can eliminate most of the tension and stress that affect us and cause us issues with mental health and even addictions.
